Stone Work
Stone that makes a space feel settled
Walls, steps, and caps you want to sit on. Natural stone that ages with the house.
Overview
How the space gets used
If you’ve been picturing a patio that feels like it has always belonged to the house, stone is a lot of how we get there. Every piece is different. The craft is in how the seams read, how the caps shed water, and how the finished work sits with the rest of the yard.
We build and veneer work that has to perform: retaining and garden walls with the right footings and drainage; veneer on fireplaces and fire pits; stairs and landings with rise, run, and nosing that are safe when they’re wet.
Dry-stack garden walls, mortared veneer, and flagstone patios are different skills. Bond patterns, movement joints, and freeze-thaw details get planned before the first stone is set.
Boulders, outcroppings, and column wraps add mass around beds, water, and entries. Caps and endings are detailed so water sheds away from the core and the paving next to it.
What we pay attention to
- Masons who care about how it looks and how it stands: footings, bond patterns, and drainage.
- Dry-stack or mortared, chosen for the job.
- Caps and endings that shed water and meet grade cleanly.
How we work
From the first walk to the last
You’ll always know what happens next. We walk the property, make a plan, then build it.
- 01
Choosing the stone
Color, thickness, whether it’s going vertical or underfoot, and how the mortar or dry-stack should read.
- 02
The structure under it
Foundation, bond lines, weeps if they’re needed, and how it ties into drainage.
- 03
The details you’ll touch
Tight joints where they belong, generous caps, clean endings into grade or the paving next to it.

FAQ
Questions we hear a lot
Plain answers, so you can plan without guessing.
Flagstone vs. pavers—what should I choose? +
Flagstone has more variation and can feel more natural. Pavers have tighter joints and are often easier to repair. We’ll recommend from how you’ll use it, the look you want, and the budget.
Can you build stone steps and landings tied to my patio? +
Yes. We work out the rise and run, where a handrail might go, and drainage at the treads so ice and water don’t sit there. The stone has to grip underfoot and still look like the rest of the patio.
Do you veneer outdoor fireplaces and fire pits in natural stone? +
Often. We coordinate the core, the clearances, and how the stone moves with heat so veneer and caps stay put season after season.
What’s the difference between dry-stack and mortared stone walls? +
Dry-stack leans on mass, friction, and drainage. Good for garden-height walls when it’s built for that. Mortared walls have tighter joints and more design flexibility, but they need movement joints and weeps done right.

These often go together
We usually plan stone & masonry with these, so drainage, utilities, and layout don’t fight each other later.
